Policy Display: This policy must be prominently displayed at the entry and within the sparring area of all gyms and clubs registered with Boxing South Australia (Boxing SA).
Sparring is permitted only under the direct supervision of a boxing coach accredited by Boxing Australia and registered with Boxing SA. Coaches must hold current accreditation and adhere to the coaching standards set forth by Boxing Australia. All athletes participating in sparring activities must be registered with Boxing SA to ensure insurance coverage.
Athletes must wear the following protective gear during sparring sessions:
Sparring gloves must be in good condition, free from defects, and suitable for safe use.
Any blood present on gloves or the body must be cleaned promptly and thoroughly to maintain a hygienic environment.
Participants are advised that sparring carries inherent risks, including infection, injury, or, in rare cases, death. By engaging in sparring, athletes acknowledge and accept these risks.
Hepatitis B is a serious illness that can be transmitted through blood contact. Vaccination is an effective preventive measure. Athletes are strongly advised to consult with their healthcare provider regarding Hepatitis B vaccination.
In the event of a diagnosed or suspected concussion, athletes must adhere to Boxing Australia’s concussion management protocols, which include refraining from training and competition until medically cleared. Detailed guidelines are available on Boxing Australia’s medical page.
All participants must comply with Boxing Australia’s National Integrity Framework, which includes policies on member protection, child safeguarding, improper use of drugs and medicine, competition manipulation, social media and sport wagering.
Athletes participating in sparring sessions are encouraged to undergo regular medical examinations to ensure they are fit to participate. While the Boxing and Martial Arts Act 2000 mandates medical clearances for contestants in professional or public boxing events, similar diligence is recommended for all sparring participants to promote safety and well-being.
By adhering to this policy, we aim to promote a safe and supportive environment for all athletes engaged in sparring activities.
